A visit to the Pasar Tamu Emart can be an interesting way to kill time on a lazy Sunday. I have an Indonesian friend by the name of Dr Adrian Pangabean who has a PhD degree in economics. Whenever he visits a foreign country, he likes to visit the market and just walk around looking at the prices of vegetables, fruits, meat and other daily necessities. He told me he can get a grasp of the costs of living in that country by visiting a market. I guess that is because of his educational background.
After our brunch at Lao Yang and shopping at Bintang Megamall and Imperial Shopping Complex, my family and I dropped by the tamu at Emart on our way home.
The durian season has started but the prices are quite expensive right now, averaging at between RM12 to RM25 per kilo depending on the species. I spot some wild durians too but the quantity was rather limited. We bought a durian that costs RM27…..it was not bad but was definitely not as good as the one that I bought from the durian vendor at the Miri Giant Fancy Kite Carnival yesterday.
It seems that the buah dabai season always coincides with the durian season. I saw some buah dabai for sale but the price is rather expensive…RM14 for half a kilo. I really don’t know why nowadays a lot of tamu vendors like to list their prices that way. Maybe it creates an impression that it is cheap. Buah dabai is a favourite of mine but I don’t feel like paying RM28 for a kilo. I will just wait for the price to drop when the buah dabai season is in full swing.
Strolling around the tamu, we can see a wide range of products for sale, ranging from fruits, vegetables, salted fish, ikan bilis, handicrafts, toys, biscuits, drinks, food, kuih and jungle products. I was in luck today because one of the stalls was selling sago worms today and I was able to take a few photos of the worms. I personally don’t dare to eat those worms though some of my friends told me that the worms are delicious when deep fried.
Emart has proven to be very successful in Miri and they are going to open a branch in Miri-Bintulu Road near the airport area to cater to residents living in that area. I am pretty sure that the new branch will be another success story given the business acumen of Emart’s founder Mr Ngu Ting Sii.
Have a happy Sunday, Mirians!
The pinkish color plant is bunga kantan, it is usually cut finely and cooked with vegetables. Its very nice 🙂
