I first watched “The Sleeping Dictionary” more than a decade ago and it was a movie that I found quite enjoyable and exotic as it was a tale about Sarawak during the British colonial rule. The 2003 American film was filmed on location in Sarawak. I suddenly remember this movie when I was on YouTube this afternoon and decided to search for it. To my delight, the entire movie is available on YouTube and I watched it again.
In the rainforests of Sarawak in the 1930s, English officer John Truscott (Hugh Dancy) accepts a position in the British colonial government of Sarawak. In following with the native tradition, he is given the services of a servant, Selima (Jessica Alba). Selima becomes his sleeping dictionary, a concubine to share his bed and teach him the language and the habits of the local. The tradition forbids romantic entanglements, so the relationship is watched over by superior officer Henry Bullard (Bob Hoskins) and his wife, Aggie (Brenda Blethyn).
John encounters some unorthodox local traditions as he tries to bring education to the Iban people. As time passes, John finds himself falling in love with Selima who reciprocates his love. Will their forbidden love come to a happy end?
I do not wish to spoil your enjoyment of the movie by revealing too much. Just go and watch the movie on YouTube:
