On the spur of the moment, I decided to drop by MYY Mall this morning to go to the top floor where Semporna Food Court was operating with the sole intention of taking some photos of the Masjid An-Naim Lutong and the Anglican Good Shepherd Church which are located side by side. The feelings of brotherhood among local Christians and Muslims is testimony to the existing understanding, tolerance and goodwill that prevail in Sarawak.
Upon reaching this top floor, I was surprised to find out that Semporna Food Court has already ceased operations. I made my way to one side of the building where I could get a good view of the mosque and the church and started clicking away on my camera. From this vantage point, I could see quite far and I find the view is quite scenic. With my zoom lens, I was able to capture some faraway spots on my camera.
I moved to another side of the building where I took some photos of the new Lutong town where Jun Rong and New World Mart are located. Lutong has grown by leaps and bounds the last few years.
After taking the photos, I saw someone drying kampua mee and I went to take a couple of photos. The towkay told me they produce instant Sibu kampua in two two different flavours: Original or Dark Soy Sauce. As I was about to leave, the towkay’s wife gave me a packet of Sibu kampua with the dark soy sauce flavour. Thank you, towkay nio! Anyway, fellow Mirians, if you are looking for instant Sibu kampua, go to the top floor of MYY Mall, okay? They do the packaging there too!
When I was on the ground and first floors of MYY Mall, I noted that many of the stores are shuttered and looking for tenants. It is really a sorry sight. The only outlet that seems to be doing okay is Econsave, the hypermarket from West Malaysia.
Miri is facing a serious glut of shophouses so finding tenants is a real headache. MYY Mall has to compete with so many other malls in Miri as well as the hundreds (maybe even over a thousand) of unoccupied shophouses in Senadin, Marina Bay, Permyjaya, Pujut 7 and other areas. And with the the Miri One O One Commercial Centre nearing completion soon, the situation is likely to worsen.
When the mall first opened, there were already not that many shops opened. You are correct that the shops were closing one by one – I hope the mall will flourish soon.
