Ais kacang stalls are springing up all over Miri. I suspect the hot weather has something to do with it. And of course a lot of people are jumping on the bandwagon when they see some ais kacang stalls doing a roaring business. It is a cash business that requires small startup capital.
Ais kacang or ice kacang, popularly known as air batu campur or ABC, is the most famous Malaysian dessert. Air batu means ‘ice’ while campur means ‘mix’. This quintessential dessert is made with a mixture of jelly, red beans, sweet corn and other condiments like longans, lychee and pineapple which is then topped with a generous mound of finely shaved ice. The concoction is then sweetened with sweet flavoured syrup such as palm sugar syrup or gula melaka, sarsaparilla syrup or rose syrup and evaporated milk.
With our blazing hot weather these days, nothing beats ais kacang to help quench our thirst. We were on our way home after sending our son to the airport when my wife suggested going for ice kacang. We stopped at Old Taste Ice Kacang & Rojak Warisan in Piasau Utara Commercial Center. For those who do not where this is, please refer to the photo below.
The wall of the shop is adorned with old photos of Miri and I started clicking away on my Canon S100. All these old photos have great nostalgic value. So if you are looking for old photos of Miri, do drop by the shop. And remember to bring your camera!
I had a special while my wife opted for ais kacang. We also ordered a dish of goreng campur. We both like our orders. The ice kacang and special were just sweet enough to suit our taste. The goreng campur was not bad too. Our bill came up to RM15 which was a tad more expensive than some of the ice kacang stalls that we used to patronize. But I must clarify that the toppings inside the special and ice kacang were more generous than other stalls. My special, for instance, had 2 lomgans and 1 lychee. At other stalls, I usually find only 1 longan or 1 lychee inside their special.
