It has been said that the best antiques to collect are old friends. The trap of busyness causes us to move with such mindless speed that we’re like the proverbial chicken running around with his head cut off. And as we get caught up in our busyness, we often slowly lose contact with old friends.
Time endears but cannot fade the memories that friends have imprinted in our mind. A reunion helps us reconnect with old friends, find out what everyone has been doing and reminisce about the past. Memories are the threads that hold together the patchwork of friendship. Attending a reunion will strengthen these threads.
I am thus getting excited about the forthcoming Reunion of Bintangkian “Lau Peng Yu” to be held in Bintangor on July 7. Kudos to the organizing committee comprising of Ivy Lee, Francis Chen, Lee Kie Chiong, Benson Chew, Jenny Chew and Magdelene Chew-Chia for doing such a wonderful job. The anticipated turnout is amazing and speaks volume about the untiring efforts of the committee members. Little details have been carefully planned to create an event that everyone would enjoy.
Bintangor is about to witness the homecoming of many of its sons and daughters from all over Malaysia as well as from several other countries including Australia, New Zealand, Canada, USA and Singapore. The Ming Kiong Hotel will probably be packed for a couple of nights. SM Kai Chung will be entertaining visits by a lot of its ex-students and teachers.
I look forward not only to the reunion but to the opportunity of visiting my birthplace again. My last visit to Bintangor was about 20 years ago. It would be great to see how Bintangor has changed and to meet up with the people from my childhood years. I also look forward to visit my late dad’s shop and have a look at the room where I grew up when I was living in Bintangor.
I must visit places and try out food which were my favorite during my Bintangor days: St Augustine’s Primary School, SM Kai Chung, Heng Chiong Bookstore, the post office, the public library, Rejang River, kompians, Bintangor oranges, Bintangor rojak and ice kacang.
It will be a nostalgic event for me, no doubt about that!
