Today is my wife’s birthday and we decided to have dinner at Reunion Diner (團圓飯店) in Pujut 7. We have heard good reviews about the restaurant especially its signature dish known as dancing pole chicken. In case you are not sure of its location, it is in the same area as Hank’s Meat & Wine.
The restaurant has a nice ambiance with some nice décor that evokes memories of a bygone era. It is not air-conditioned but it is not hot and is quite spacious.
We ordered the dancing pole chicken, fried sotong, fried assorted mushrooms and salted vegetable tofu soup. We have read online that their service can sometimes be slow and bad so I was a bit apprehensive. But we find their service was reasonably good and fast.
If you imagine the dancing pole chicken to be a chicken doing pole dancing, you are not too far off. But I think a more appropriate name would be crucified pole chicken. It is actually just like the crispy skin chicken that we are often served at Chinese wedding dinners. I would rate their chicken as not bad and better than those served at a lot of Chinese restaurants but it is nothing to shout about. The chicken skin is crispy and the meat tender. It goes along well with the grinded chilli sauce provided.
We like the mushroom dish as it was quite tasty. The fried sotong was a bit disappointing and the salted vegetable soup was just average.
Will we go back to this restaurant again? My answer is a resounding yes as there are a lot of other dishes that we have not tried.
