They say every marriage has its secrets.
But no one sees what happens behind closed doors.
And sometimes those doors should never be opened …
Between You And Me by Lisa Hall is a simple psychological thriller with the mother of all twists revealed in the second last chapter. I totally did not see the twist coming. When it was revealed, my initial reaction was that the author must have made typo errors and in my mind I was thinking the book’s editor has goofed up for not noticing the typo errors. Then the penny dropped as the twist hit me with a BANG!
Charlie is a corporate lawyer who works long hours and Sal stays home to take care of their daughter, Maggie. To all outsiders, Sal and Charlie appear to be the perfect couple in a perfect marriage. But behind closed doors, Charlie is a control freak who demands rules must be followed or punishments will be dished out. As I was reading I can’t help feeling enraged by the constant abuse Charlie inflicts on Sal.
My only complaint is that there is one aspect that really got on my nerves at times. Chapters alternate between the point of views of Sal and Charlie. It is an interesting way to see both sides of the same moments but when it becomes so repetitive, it starts to grate on me. In one chapter the events would be told from Sal’s perspective. In the next chapter the exact same events would be given from Charlie’s perspective. Despite that, I thoroughly enjoyed the novel.
This is an easy read as the writing style is simple and the chapters are short. It packs a punch and an ending that will leave you gasping. This is Lisa’s debut novel and it has turned out to be a very impressive debut. I can foresee a great future for her,
