When Mac Kelsey finds his lorry wedged under a low country bridge while on a delivery run of animal feed, he never expects that his life would be over soon. His lorry blocks the narrrow lane in and out of the village of Shawhead. A local woman on her way home reports the stranded lorry to the police after being unable to locate the lorry driver and finding blood inside the lorry.
DI Ben Cooper is given the task of investigating Kelsey’s disappearance. With the road blocked to allow forensic officers to do their work, the residents in the affected area get impatient and angry. These households might live just next to each other but it’s clear that little love is lost between most of them.
When the Kelsey’s body is found nearby in a shallow grave, suspicion falls on the inhabitants of Shawhead. To unravel the story behind Kelsey’s murder, Cooper has to uncover the truth about a fatal accident in the area eight years ago, digging up long-buried secrets in his search for the killer.
After reading this book, I have not become a fan of Stephen Booth. I was exasperated with the parts when he rambles on and on about the roads and countryside. This novel is not really my cup of tea.
