Today is Singapore’s 47th birthday. To all Singaporeans, happy National Day!
The logo for National Day Parade (NDP) 2012, also known as the “Orchidstar”, incorporates various elements that express this year’s theme “Loving Singapore, Our Home”.
Inspired by Singapore’s iconic national flower the ‘Vanda Miss Joaquim’ orchid, the NDP 2012 logo reminds Singaporeans from all walks of life of this garden city they call “Home”. The vibrant colours of the logo reflect the vitality and diversity of its people. The red heart embedded within the logo symbolises Singaporeans’ love for their people and their nation. It also reminds Singaporeans of the importance of a harmonious and inclusive society. The lip of the orchid is represented as the number ’47′, highlighting the nation’s 47th birthday this year.
The design is also reminiscent of a star; taken together with the child-like script depicting this year’s theme, the “Orchidstar” represents Singaporeans’ hopes and dreams through the generations. It reminds all Singaporeans of how they have worked hard for their achievements, and encourages them to reach out together for a brighter future.
Singaporeans are a diverse people comprising different races, religions and languages, making up a melting-pot of varied perspectives. Despite their differences, Singaporeans are united as one People; as Singaporeans, they possess a unique culture, a common heritage and a shared identity. They have built their nation together, through common ideals and their indomitable spirit. They are bonded in their experiences of Singapore as Home.
The theme for National Day Parade (NDP) 2012 is “Loving Singapore, Our Home”. “Loving Singapore” encourages Singaporeans to reflect on what it means to love their country, what they appreciate about Singapore, and how each individual can express his love for the nation.
“Our Home” expresses the fundamental reason why Singaporeans love their country; it reminds them that despite their differences, they all call this island “Home”. It is their sanctuary, where they grew up and where their future generations will continue to reside. “Our Home” emphasises the fact that the prospects of the country and her people are intertwined. It invites all Singaporeans to take ownership, to have a say and a stake, in this country they call “Home”.
Taken together, the NDP 2012 theme evokes the warmth and fondness Singaporeans feel for their country, and the comfort and familiarity of home. It is a declaration that resonates with Singaporeans from all walks of life, calling them to celebrate everything that they love about Singapore this national day – “Loving Singapore, Our Home”
In line with the theme of the NDP 2012, a four-and-a-half minute heart-warming music video, titled “ I Still Love You”, has been released and is starting to go viral on YouTube.
The video, by composer Galvin Sng, depicts the challenges and frustrations that Singaporeans have to face daily, including crowded buses and trains, long queues at food stalls and the habit of some Singaporeans who reserved empty seats at hawker stalls with packs of tissue paper.
Sng, 41, said that the keyword in the song was the word “still”.
“No matter what happens, Singapore is still our hometown. We still love Singapore,” he said, adding that the lyrics and movie clip showed the love-hate relationship many Singaporeans have with their country.
The video has received an unexpected endorsement from Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
“It was produced by a group of Singaporeans to express their love for Singapore this National Day. Enjoyed it and hope you like it too,” he said.
