A lot of us succumb to doubts about our faith as we cope with trials and tribulations that come our way. We ask all the existential questions when we are in the midst of a faith-testing trauma. I will be the first to admit that I am guilty of that. And the gloom that seems to be enveloping Malaysia lately only serves to exacerbate the situation.
I recently watched the movie Miracles From Heaven, a 2016 American Christian drama film directed by Patricia Riggen and written by Randy Brown. It is based on the book Miracles from Heaven by Christy Beam, which recounts the incredible true story of her 10-year old daughter Annabel who has a rare, incurable intestinal motility disorder which makes eating impossible.
Christy (played by Jennifer Garner) becomes a ferocious advocate for her daughter’s healing as she searches for a medical solution. She acknowledges that her faith is so shattered that she can’t even pray anymore After Annabel has a freak accident plummeting 30 feet head first towards the ground inside a hollow tree, firefighters spent hours in a dramatic rescue of her from the tree. In the hospital following her accident, doctors ran MRI and CT scans and were amazed to see her skull and brain were intact and had not sustained any major injuries. Annabel told her family that in her near-death experience, she went to Heaven and met Jesus, who healed her. Further tests revealed Annabel was cured of her incurable disease, leaving medical specialists mystified, her family restored and their community inspired.
This is a faith-based film to truly cross over and find both critical acclaim and a mainstream audience beyond just the church-going crowd. The film’s central notion is that miracles are everywhere.
Make sure tissues are on standby. Whether you’re the faithful target audience for “Miracles From Heaven,” a non-believer or someone in the mass agnostic middle ground, you may find it hard to hold back your tears at a few scenes in the movie, especially when Annabel tells her mother in the hospital that she would rather die than live such a miserable life.
Sit back and watch the official trailer for the movie:
