A lot of Singaporeans are up in arms about the way the city state was portrayed in the Cinderella and the Dragon episode of US television series Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders.
I know it’s just a TV show and things should not be taken seriously. But for tv viewers who have never been to Singapore, they will tend to believe what they see on the show. That would really put Singapore in a very bad light.
The description of Geylang as an overcrowded slum with a thriving underworld ruffled a lot of feathers. The characters in the show also say a whole bunch of things that further irked many Singaporeans. Singaporeans are also incredulous over veteran Hong Kong-American actor Tzi Ma’s portrayal of a Singaporean police officer in the show as his Singaporean accent is a failure.Watch the offending clip below:
