Who owns the most bitcoins? That question has intrigued the whole world and no one knows the answers for sure. Most Bitcoiners do not store vast quantities in a single wallet. They stash them in many wallets and all are anonymous.
But the honour is widely believed to belong to bitcoin’s shadowy inventor Satoshi Nakamoto. Satoshi is estimated to have mined 1 million bitcoins in the early days of the digital currency. He is believed to have stored his stash across a large number of wallets. And if he is still holding the 1 million bitcoins, his holding is worth about US$2.5 billion based on current price of bitcoin. But no one knows who is Satoshi. Though the name is Japanese, there have been many attempts to identify who Satoshi really is. But consensus about Satoshi’s true identity has never been reached, and there’s no indication Satishi will ever come forward to solve the mystery.
The second largest holder of bitcoins is believed to be the FBI. It is estimated that the FBI now controls more than 174,000 bitcoins that it seized from Silk Road and Dread Pirate Roberts— the operator of the illicit online marketplace, an American man named Ross Ulbricht. The stash is worth about US$435 million at the current bitcoin price of US$2500.
Trailing behind the FBI, the famous Winklevoss twins, Cameron and Tyler, have reputedly cornered about 1 percent of all bitcoins (there are 16.44 million bitcoins in circulation). Their stash is worth about US$411 million.
In the world of bitcoin tracking, it’s hard to say anything for certain. But it is undeniable Bitcoiners love keeping an eye on the top bitcoin wallet holders or the bitcoinerati.
