A Burst of Yellow Flames

I was walking from my office near Wang Tze Tai Café to the Hong Leong Bank opposite Mega Hotel this afternoon when I saw that the yellow flame (Peltophorum pterocarpum ) tree behind the bank was bursting with yellow flowers. After work, I took my compact Canon S100 and went to take photos of the tree and its flowers.

These flowers, with several flowers emerging on a long stalk, are about 3cm in size, and have wavy, crinkled petals that resemble tissue paper. The flowers have conspicuous orange stamens and each petal has a reddish brown mark in the center.

The yellow flame is a a popular tree for roadside planting due to its wide-spreading, umbrella-shaped crown which provides excellent shade. The drought-resistant tree grows well in poor soils because it contains nitrogen fixing bacteria in its roots.

After the flowering season, the flowers develop into woody purple-brown fruit pods each with up to 4 seeds that look like sunflower seeds. These pods remain in the crown for several months before dropping off.

The car parks beneath the tree were littered with the flowers. It was a beautifil sight. How I wish all the roadside in Miri are planted with yellow flame and golden shower trees!
