I seldom buy original CDs as they are way too expensive. But once in a blue moon, I allow myself the luxury of forking out RM40 to RM50 for a CD that really caught my fancy. Adele’s third album “25” is one such CD.
When I saw the CDs hitting the Speedy Video store in Miri recently, I immediately grabbed a copy of it. And having listened to the CD a few times, I have no regrets whatsoever!
“25” was released on 20 November 2015, through XL Recordings. Following the 2011 release and international success of her second studio album “21”, Adele considered quitting the music industry and going out on a positive note. Fortunately for her legions of fans, she decided to take a hiatus instead and raise her son.
Titled as a reflection of her life and frame of mind at 25 years old, 25 is a “make-up record”. The album’s lyrical content features themes of Adele yearning for her old self, her nostalgia, and melancholy about the passage of time as well as themes of motherhood and regret.
Amid heavy promotion and an anticipated release, the album was released to critical and commercial success. 25 debuted at number one in more than 25 markets and broke first-week sales records in multiple countries. In the US, the album sold 3.38 million copies in its first week of release, marking the largest single-week sales for an album since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking point-of-sale music purchases in 1991. To date, the album has chalked up sales of about 6 million copies in the US and about 2 million copies in the UK. Her single “Hello,” uploaded to YouTube on October 22, has garnered more than 760 million views.
