Where making movies in Singapore is concerned, you can bank on Jack Neo. His latest movie Ah Boys to Men (新兵正傳) has broken local box-office records by earning more than $1.5 million over its opening weekend, in the process beating the James Bond movie Skyfall, which was in its second week of release.
The coming-of-age film about youths stepping out of their comfort zone to go through national service took $1,509,422 from November 8 to November 11, giving it the biggest opening weekend ever for a local movie.
With 37 prints in cinemas, it beat the previous record-holder, the 2008 comedy Ah Long Pte Ltd, also directed by Neo, which had made $1,484,000 with 50 prints in its opening weekend over Chinese New Year.
Ah Boys to Men stars local veteran actor Richard Low, well-known actress/comedienne Irene Ang, celebrated musician Roy Li, Wang Lei, Jacky Chin, Aizuddin Nasser, Wang Wei Liang, Noah Yap, Joshua Tan, Alvin Richard, Charlie Goh, Daniel Ang, Feng Wenna, Hanrey Low, Janson Lim, Luke Lee, Ridhwan Azman, Justin Dominic Misson, Maxi Lim and famous bloggers Mr Brown and Qiu Qiu.
The film consists of two parts, the first released in Singapore on November 8 2012, and the second scheduled for release on February 7, 2013. It is meant to commemorate the 45th anniversary of Singapore’s National Service and its “From Fathers To Sons” campaign.
With the movie making a killing at the box office, the movie’s theme song “Recruit’s Anthem” has gone viral. Composed by YouTube personality Tosh Zhang, who goes by the stage name Tosh Rock, the 4-minute song has garnered almost 300,000 views and over 450 comments on YouTube over the past two weeks. Reaction to the song has been overwhelmingly positive.
