Korea Heritage Restaurant has been operating at Marina Square in Miri since the latter part of last year but it was only yesterday that we dropped by the restaurant for dinner. It was about 6pm when we arrived and we were the only customer.
We ordered mushroom jeon, fish jeon, rice cake, bibimbap and torikatsu as well as a pot of Korean barley tea.
The waiter brought us five small side dishes comprising of kimchi, mashed potato, black beans, pickled cucumber and another vegetable dish (no idea what it was). I did not touch the kimchi as I am not a fan of the dish but the other four were not too bad, particularly the back beans.
Jeon (also spelled chŏn) refer to many pancake-like dishes in Korean cuisine. The mushroom jeon was really good especially with the chilli sauce. The fish jeon too was good too but I prefer the mushroom jeon.
Bibimbap (비빔밥) is probably one of the most well-known and beloved Korean signature dishes. Bibimbap simply translates to “mixed rice with meat and assorted vegetables“. Bibimbap is served as a bowl of warm white rice topped with namul (sautéed and seasoned vegetables), some minced meat and a raw egg. The waiter stirred everything together thoroughly for us. This is the first that I have ever tasted this dish and it was honestly quite nice.
The torikatsu is a breaded, deep-fried chicken cutlet that is sliced into bite-sized strips. Our torikatsu was served with a dark brownish sauce and shredded cabbage. I like the chicken strips as they were well fried and crunchy.
Rice cake, called tteok in Korean, is a much-loved Korean traditional dish. This was a dish that I really enjoyed as the rice cake was chewy and the sauce was tasty with a tinge of spiciness.
Overall, this was a good culinary experience and I will be back again.
