On shows like The X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent, there has been contestants who looked like they were going to be hopeless but had stunned both the judges and the audience when they opened their mouths and turned out to be really amazing singers.
Following one such performance last week by Jade Richards on X Factor, a buxom 31-year-old barmaid from North Wales last night wowed the judging panel and won herself a standing ovation from both the judges and audience with her rendition of Whitney Houston’s One Moment In Time in X Factor auditions in Manchester.
When Samantha Brookes took to the stage in a leopard print top, she took the time to tell Louis Walsh how much she fancied him, wiggling her bottom at Louis after revealing her true feelings for the 59-year-old. She spent a lot of time talking, prompting Gary Barlow to shift her on a bit.
When the music started, Samantha was transformed from being a joker to a very composed and confident performer, belting out her heartfelt and emotional rendition of the Whitney Houston hit. Her stirring performance brought her family and friends backstage to tears.
Sami revealed that she felt her size let her down in her bid to be a singer, saying “I was always a little bit under-confident because you see artists like Rihanna and Beyonce.”
But ex-Destiny’s Child star Kelly Rowland was quick to boost Sami.
Kelly told her: “You don’t have to change anything and you know what your size is honey? Sexy. You size sexy.”
Telling Sami that she was too ‘excited’ up to return to her seat after a standing ovation, Kelly added: “If I could crowd-surf right now, I totally would,”
Gary Barlow called the rendition ‘absolutely amazing’ and added that as well as the ‘big’ belted notes, he also loved how ‘pure and beautiful’ her quieter parts were.
Louis Walsh told Sami that she was “born to sing”, adding: “Where have you been hiding?”
To no one’s surprise, Samantha Brookes received four yes votes from the judges and advanced to boot camp stage.
