Taking a short break from Scott Mariani’s novels, I decided to read something different for a change and I chose The Day I Lost You by Fionnuala Kearney. What a great choice it has turned out to be! This family drama book deals with grief, love, family, relationships, lies and deception. It is a genre of books that I hardly ever read.
Jess receives the most heartbreaking news that her daughter Anna has been reported missing after an avalanche when she is on a ski trip in France. Her whole world, which revolves around Anna and Rose, crumbles but her first instinct is to protect Rose, Anna’s five-year-old daughter.
While waiting for more news about Anna, Jess learns more and more about her daughter that she never knew before. Her whole world is irrevocably changed. Realising that Anna had kept secrets from her, she starts to question everything about their relationship.
The book is an exceptional portrait of grief and loss but it is not all anguish and misery. It is also uplifting. The focus remains on Jess, Anna, and their close friend Theo. We hear the points of view of Jess and friend Theo, punctuated by Anna’s voice on her personal blog. The supporting cast of characters are beautifully portrayed, making this wonderful family drama realistic and touching. You can’t help liking Rose, Jess’ granddaughter.
Be prepared to shed a few tears while reading this book. The author really connects with her readers. I was surprised that I found it difficult to put down the book once I had started reading it. I have some quivers of suspicion but the author has planted some red herrings. The book surpasses my expectations and I highly recommend this book!
