Until You’re Mine by Samantha Hayes is creepy, tense and gripping with red herrings and cliffhangers on every other page. The book is told from the first person perspective of Claudia and Zoe and in a third person narrative when focusing on the two detectives, Adam and Lorraine. The narratives of Claudia and Zoe add a lot of tension as we hear Claudia’s thoughts on Zoe and Zoe’s thoughts on Claudia.
Claudia Morgan-Brown is a social worker who’s happily married to James and is the doting stepmother of four-year-old twin boys from James’ marriage to his late wife Elizabeth. Heavily pregnant with a much-wanted first baby girl, she feels that she needs a nanny as James’s work as a submarine navy officer requires him to be at sea for weeks or even months on each deployment.
Zoe Harper, the applicant Claudia hires, seems to be the answer to her prayer for the perfect nanny, with impeccable references and a way with children. Yet there is something that leaves Claudia unsettled about Zoe. Claudia’s anxiety turns to real fear when she finds Zoe snooping around her bedroom and her husband’s study.
Det. Insp. Lorraine Fisher and her fellow police detective husband Adam are investigating vicious attacks on pregnant women. They try to unravel the puzzling crimes.
The plot thickens as hidden connections between the characters begin to emerge. The story builds up to a stunning twist!
If you love psychological thrillers, this book is for you. You won’t be able to turn the pages fast enough and it ends with an unnerving twist, a twist that will leave you flabbergasted. It is a book that drips menace. And the last line of the book is brilliant.
This is the first book by Samantha Hayes that I have read. I have two other novels by her: You Belong To Me and In Too Deep. I can’t wait to get started on reading these two.
